Become a Patent Attorney

To become a patent attorney you will need a degree in a subject that surrounds:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering, or
  • Maths

A degree in one of these subjects is necessary. It can help you understand how a client’s concept or invention works (and what makes it novel). The training to become a patent attorney also involves working for one or more fully qualified patent attorneys. It is mainly on-the-job training and includes sitting a series of examinations.

Become a Trade Mark Attorney

To train as a trade mark attorney you won’t need a STEM undergraduate degree. However, you will need to:

  • complete at least two years’ of full-time practice as a trade mark attorney
  • sit qualifying exams

Your training would be under the direct supervision of a registered trade mark attorney.
